But today, some of the world’s foremost experts on pet health and behavior — from the biotech looking to engineer an anti-aging pill to the university initiative helping more than 53,000 dogs grow old gracefully — are setting their sights on upending that status quo.
As a result, the “forever dog” — a pet that lives twice as long in peak health — has evolved from a concept at the fringes of science fiction to a multibillion-dollar emerging industry. However, the increased investment has also laid bare the reality that the challenge is too massive, too complex, and too urgent for any one nation to solve in isolation. To succeed, the quest for the forever dog must become a borderless mission.
Building a Global Brain Trust for Pet Health
Earlier this year, the advancement of dog longevity drug LOY-002 passed a critical juncture in the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval process, making worldwide headlines. Although not yet approved, the clinical trial success of this once-daily flavored tablet to enhance and extend the lifespan of senior dogs is already a monumental achievement. However, even though this biotech breakthrough deserves celebration, a pill is only one piece of a much larger jigsaw puzzle.
Across the globe, countries are already playing to their strengths when it comes to improving dog health: While the Americas lead in biotech, Asia is leaning into high-tech manufacturing, releasing sophisticated AI-backed wearables that use technology to improve dogs’ well-being and flag diseases in their infancy. Meanwhile, an existing nationwide veterinary data pool in Australia has enabled the country to take the lead in health diagnostics, with scientists using that data to more closely examine the range and frequency of breed-specific health problems to improve their identification, treatment, and prevention. Although these initiatives are impressive in isolation, they’re groundbreaking when viewed in the context of a larger worldwide effort.
Why the Forever Dog Starts With AI
Until now, veterinarians’ understanding of a dog’s overall health has been defined in two key ways:
- A 20-minute window of firsthand observation
- A pet owner’s verbal report of how things are going day-to-day
However, these both fail to capture the subtle cues that are arguably more important:
- A one-minute decrease in stair-climbing velocity
- A slight disruption in sleep-rest cycles
- An intermittent change in heart rate variability during a walk
This is where “always-on” pet tech wearables equipped with artificial intelligence or machine learning come in. With the ability to collect data 24/7 at scale on a dog’s condition and then use AI to analyze it in real time, it is now possible to create a digital baseline for individual dogs across different breeds and environments. This level of insight, previously unprecedented in animal science, not only allows veterinarians to be more proactive in their care but also holds promise for more comprehensive clinical testing in the future. It is no longer a stretch to believe that a drug developed in America could be tested with an advanced AI algorithm from China and verified with Australian breed-specific data; in fact, this is the only model that may make the forever dog a reality.
Ending the Impossible Quest
The quest for the forever dog is, at its core, an attempt to defy the biological clock. As such, it is one of the most important global moonshot initiatives underway today. Humans and dogs share between 82% and 84% of their DNA, meaning that medical breakthroughs for canine antiaging may not always be reserved for dogs. They could one day assist humans as well.
Solving canine longevity is no longer a localized ambition or a niche scientific pursuit. It is a borderless mission that will require the West’s biotech, the East’s hardware innovation, and the Southern Hemisphere’s vast diagnostic registries to work in tandem to solve.
Although a literal forever dog is still out of reach, the synergy of global innovation and advanced diagnostics is fundamentally rewriting what’s possible for canine health. By extending the canine healthspan, the global community is finally granting man’s best friend the one thing they have always lacked: a lifespan that matches their devotion.
