The Portland Head Light is Maine's oldest lighthouse.
Maine is quickly becoming a hub for animal health businesses, according to the Portland Press Herald.
The animal health industry has been expanding rapidly in southern Maine through major developments such as:
- The $62 million expansion of Idexx Laboratories Inc. in Westbrook.
- The 2016 acquisition of Portland pet drug maker Putney Inc. by Britain’s Dechra Pharmaceuticals PLC.
- The recent completion of ImmuCell’s $20 million factory.
- The planned merger of Vets First Choice, which is building a $20 million headquarters in Portland, and Henry Schein Animal Health.
The newspaper acknowledged that Portland “is a long way from becoming like Kansas City, home to over 300 animal health companies representing more than 50 percent of total worldwide animal health, diagnostics and pet food sales.”
“Maine’s never going to get as big as the KC Animal Health Corridor, but if we had even some small growth in that direction, it’s very valuable,” Michael Brigham, president and CEO of ImmuCell, told the Press Herald.
