Zoetis Inc.’s new 12-month heartworm preventive, ProHeart 12, will begin shipping to U.S. practitioners in early August.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s Center for Veterinary Medicine on July 2 announced the regulatory approval of ProHeart 12 (moxidectin), a once-a-year injection formulated to prevent heartworm disease and treat hookworms.
Zoetis is taking online orders for ProHeart 12. Veterinarians also can purchase the prescription preventive by contacting a Zoetis representative or distributor, or by calling 888-963-8471.
Three studies confirmed that ProHeart 12 is 100% effective against heartworm disease caused by Dirofilaria immitis, the manufacturer reported. The active ingredient, moxidectin, is contained in slow-dissolving microspheres that are stored in a dog’s adipose tissue, Zoetis stated.
“Dogs of all ages, breeds and lifestyles are susceptible to heartworm disease, which is a threat year-round and has been found in all 50 states,” said Claire Walther, DVM, a member of the Veterinary Specialty Team at Zoetis Petcare.
ProHeart 12 is indicated for use in dogs at least a year old.
