Today’s Veterinary Business Staff

SAGE Veterinary Centers has expanded beyond Northern California for the second time with the acquisition of Veterinary Specialists of Alaska.
Terms of the purchase of the Anchorage referral practice were not announced. Mike Edwards, DVM, MS, DACVS, opened the practice in 2003.
“I am excited to join the SAGE organization because I feel that our practice philosophies are well aligned,” Dr. Edwards said. “We share the desire to be leaders in our area in providing high-quality patient care within our specialties. Joining with SAGE will allow us to expand our resources and the breadth and depth of services that we can offer to pets and their owners in Alaska.”
Veterinary Specialists of Alaska is a three-doctor small animal practice offering dermatology, surgery, physical rehabilitation and diagnostics, among other services. The hospital, open Monday through Friday, serves more than 600 patients a year and works with over 170 referring veterinarians, according to SAGE.
SAGE Veterinary Centers purchased Yakima Pet Emergency Service in Washington State in May 2019. Also part of the network are four specialty and emergency hospitals — in Campbell, Concord, Dublin and Redwood City, California — and two ophthalmology clinics in nearby San Carlos and San Francisco.
SAGE in late 2018 announced an investment agreement with the private equity firm Chicago Pacific Founders Fund L.P. that was intended to fund expansion.
