Starting October 1, veterinarians in Maryland will be legally permitted to discuss and recommend therapeutic cannabis products to their clients. Maryland is the fifth U.S. state to adopt a veterinary-specific cannabis law, joining California, Michigan, Nevada, and Utah.
The legislation — Maryland HB452 — provides legal protection for practitioners who previously risked disciplinary action for advising clients on CBD and cannabis products. It allows the state’s veterinarians to openly engage in fact-based discussions with pet owners seeking viable therapeutic options.
While the new law provides regional relief, the lack of uniform state and federal regulations continues to hinder veterinary clinical protocols and academic research nationwide.
