Merck Animal Health has received an Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for BRAVECTO (fluralaner) Chews to treat infestations caused by New World screwworm larvae in dogs and puppies.
The EUA was supported by efficacy data demonstrating that dogs treated with a single oral dose of BRAVECTO achieved complete elimination of live larvae from lesions within 24 hours. The prescription chews, which also retain their standard 12-week flea and tick protection, are expected to be available with EUA-specific labeling by the early second quarter of 2027.
Dr. Frank Guerina, associate vice president of global pharmaceutical development at Merck, stated that “rapid intervention is critical” when managing the parasitic fly infestations. Addressing the broader public and animal health context, Dr. Meg Conlon, Merck’s executive director of U.S. companion animal services, noted that the EUA ensures practitioners have access to treatment tools during times of heightened disease risk.
