Vetoquinol USA is cautioning veterinarians and pet owners about the discovery of counterfeit Zylkene sold by a third-party seller on Amazon.
Genuine Zylkene is a supplement given to cats and dogs to promote calmness.
The fake 75-milligram capsules come in 120-count bottles bearing the lot number 048019 and the expiration date 05/2021. Vetoquinol is offering free replacements to purchasers who call customer service at 817-529-7500.
“Thankfully, there are no illnesses or injuries associated with this instance, and no other Vetoquinol products or additional sizes of Zylkene were counterfeited,” said Eric M. Alsup, DVM, Vetoquinol USA’s country manager. “Customers can purchase Zylkene from authorized retailers and be assured of its safety and quality.
“Unfortunately, the sale of counterfeit products is a challenge many other global manufacturers continue to face. We are working with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to address this problem.”
The company did not identify the illicit online seller.
Vetoquinol advised pet owners and veterinary professionals to:
- Purchase from trusted, authorized retailers.
- Inspect packaging upon receipt for suspicious labeling or missing or damaged seals.
- When in doubt, call the manufacturer.
