Zoetis Inc. has launched Stablelab, a handheld device designed to check a horse’s blood for biomarkers of inflammation caused by infection.
The 10-minute test “quantifies the biomarker serum amyloid A (SAA), which is a major, acute phase protein produced by the liver that rapidly and dramatically increases in response to inflammation caused by infection,” Zoetis reported. “By measuring SAA, veterinarians can assess the severity of an infection sooner — often before clinical symptoms start — and …. monitor the horse’s response over the course of treatment.”
Jeannie Jeffery of Zoetis’ U.S. Equine business unit called point-of-care testing “one of the fastest-growing areas of diagnostics.”
Among other point-of-care diagnostic products from Zoetis are VetScan and i-STAT Alinity.
