Animal Nutritional Products has introduced a veterinary-exclusive CBD (cannabidiol) chew formulated for pets suffering from pain, stress and other conditions.
PhytoMAXX Bites contains a hemp extract as well as capsicum, which the manufacturer stated “activates the TRPV1 receptor that can influence pain perception.”
Among other ingredients in the supplement are glucosamine, hyaluronic acid, omega-3 fatty acids and astaxanthin.
“These ingredients combined with our propriety BioHemp hemp extract can possibly and significantly help with joint, immune, antioxidant, skin and stress-related issues,” said Robert Kovler, CEO at Animal Nutritional Products.
The New York company sold supplements only to veterinarians when it launched in 2001 and expanded into the direct-to-consumer market in 2013. Its other products include ArthriMAXX and UroMAXX.
Demand for CBD pet supplements is growing, the market research firm Packaged Facts reported in May.
“Even with regulatory issues yet to be settled … survey data show that among pet owners, 39% of dog owners and 34% of cat owners agree that they like the idea of CBD supplements for their pets,” Packaged Facts stated in the report “Pet Supplements in the U.S., 7th Edition.”
A Packaged Facts white paper, “Cannabis, CBD and Hemp: Pet Market Opportunities,” pointed out: “To date, pet owner interest in CBD centers on relieving anxiety and stress issues in pets — a rising concern especially among urban pet owners whose dogs share their indoors, space-restricted lifestyle.”
