Nestlé Purina PetCare has released a therapeutic dog food formulated to assist in elimination diet trials and the nutritional management of dermatological and gastrointestinal conditions.
Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets EL Elemental is an amino acid-based dry food containing omega fatty acids, vitamin A and zinc to support skin health and prebiotic fiber for the GI tract. In addition, the diet’s low-allergen carbohydrate sources help minimize the risk of allergic reactions, Purina added.
“Amino acid-based enteral diets may help reduce potential complicating factors in elimination diet trials, including sensitization to multiple allergens, failure to select novel proteins and persistent allergenicity of hydrolysates,” Purina reported.
Elemental diets have been critical in managing human patients with allergic disease and severely compromised GI tracts, said Jason Gagné, DVM, DACVN, director of veterinary technical communication for Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets.
“With EL Elemental, Purina researchers leveraged these learnings and formulated a diet that now gives veterinarians the flexibility to recommend an amino acid-based elemental diet for their patients,” he said.
