Michigan State University has jumped onto the top 10 list of veterinary schools worldwide, trailing only UC Davis and Cornell among U.S. institutions.
The QS World University Rankings by Subject placed Michigan State’s College of Veterinary Medicine at No. 8. The list compiled by British educational publisher Quacquarelli Symonds was based on academic and employer surveys, academic papers and citations, and research.
MSU has climbed the international ladder the past few years, earning QS rankings of 15 in 2016, 12 in 2017, and 11 in 2019 and 2018.
“At a time when everyone is being challenged by the COVID-19 pandemic and good news is a hot commodity, our college takes special pride in the high quality of education we deliver to our students,” said Birgit Puschner, DVM, Ph.D., DABVT, dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine. “Our DVM program is a testament not just to our students and educators, but to our entire community — alumni, donors, staff, and our health and research partners — that supports us no matter the context or conditions we face.”
While in the top 10 worldwide, MSU didn’t fare as well in U.S. News and World Report’s 2019 domestic rankings, which were based on surveys of academics at peer institutions. The magazine’s grading of 28 U.S. veterinary schools put Michigan State at No. 17.
Leading the QS list was the University of California, Davis, School of Veterinary Medicine, which also earned the top spot from U.S. News and World Report. The Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine is No. 3 internationally and No. 2 with U.S. News and World Report.
