Marie Kerl, DVM, MPH, DACVIM, DACVECC, has been promoted to chief medical officer of the VCA Animal Hospitals network.
Dr. Kerl, VCA’s former regional medical director and regional operations director, replaced long-time chief medical officer Todd Tams, DVM, DACVIM. Dr. Tams is the new chief medical officer for external affairs at parent company Mars Veterinary Health.
Before her 2017 hiring at VCA Animal Hospitals, Dr. Kerl was an associate professor of emergency/critical care and internal medicine at the University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine. She received the Norden Distinguished Teaching Award.
“Dr. Kerl brings a wealth of education and experience to her new position, a critical role for VCA as she leads the medical teams and represents the organization within the veterinary profession and Mars Veterinary Health,” said Todd Lavender, DVM, president of VCA Animal Hospitals and Petcare Services.
She earned her doctorate of veterinary medicine degree from Auburn University.
According to Los Angeles-based VCA, which operates more than 1,000 clinics, Dr. Kerl is active in veterinary disaster response as a member of the AVMA Veterinary Medical Assistance Team, the National Veterinary Response Team and the Missouri Volunteer Veterinary Corps.
