Kudos on “Proudly Independent” [February/March 2023]. The 10 profiles speak to the general practitioner and don’t encourage young veterinarians to go looking for “something better” in industry or specialty practice.
The best and brightest need to pursue general practice because they serve as internist, dentist, ophthalmologist, imaging specialist, surgeon, dermatologist, cardiologist and more for their clients, many of whom cannot afford the high prices of specialty clinics.
We need so many more general practitioners to take the place of retiring baby boomers and those who decided to drop out or work part time. Veterinarians who think the profession is not in crisis probably have rich clients or work in academia.
Please continue to emphasize the needs of independent veterinary practitioners. The 25% of practices and 75% of specialty practices owned by corporations do not need and do not want your advice.
