When I was hired as an editorial intern at Denver’s 5280 Magazine more than 15 years ago, I was tasked with selecting the editor’s choice winner of five categories for the magazine’s annual “Top of the Town” issue. Armed with a research budget and a healthy dose of imposter syndrome, I hit the Denver streets in search of the best gluten-free menu, personal trainer, pet groomer, running race, and doggie daycare. (Yes, I requested those categories.) I couldn’t believe they were trusting me — an editorial intern — to make these important decisions.
I learned a lot during my 5280 days: It takes a team of talented people — even editorial interns — to produce a magazine, fact-checking is a lot of work, writing succinctly is a superpower, journalists can never make everyone happy, and writers shouldn’t get too attached to their words, because some favorites will undoubtedly be cut. I also learned just how much I love magazines — a love that would eventually lead me to Today’s Veterinary Business.
Since 2017, the stack of magazines on my coffee table has always included the latest issue of Today’s Veterinary Business. Its expert insights and practical perspectives helped me keep a finger on the pulse of the industry. It brought comfort and confidence during times of change, and fresh perspectives when it felt like change was needed.
As I step into the editor-in-chief role, that imposter syndrome I felt as an editorial intern is back. I want Today’s Veterinary Business to continue enriching the careers and lives of its readers. I want to face industry problems head-on and inspire conversations that lead to positive change. I want to share ideas and solutions from people across different roles and career stages.
Just like I was empowered to choose the best gluten-free menu, personal trainer, pet groomer, running race, and doggie daycare in Denver, I’m now empowered to publish pioneering perspectives and solution-oriented tools to contribute to the betterment of the veterinary industry. That’s not a responsibility I take lightly.
