A new veterinary-exclusive nutritional supplement containing both a prebiotic and probiotic is designed to assist cats and dogs suffering from diarrhea and support a healthy intestinal microbiome.
FortiFlora SA Synbiotic Action, part of the Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Supplements line, comes in separate formulas for cats and dogs.
Made with the probiotic Enterococcus faecium SF68 and the prebiotic fiber psyllium, the supplement should be sprinkled on a pet’s food.
“Over the past decade, veterinarians have come to recognize the benefits of SF68, the probiotic in FortiFlora supplements, to canine and feline patients with diarrhea and other forms of gastrointestinal upset,” said Jason Gagné, DVM, DACVN, Purina’s director of veterinary technical communication. “With FortiFlora SA, practitioners can go a step further with a supplement that fuels and feeds gut bacteria in a single sachet.”
The medical indications for FortiFlora SA include nutritional management of chronic enteritis and diarrhea associated with microflora imbalance, stress and antibiotic therapy, according to the manufacturer.
“In addition, the synbiotic supplement is indicated to increase microbial diversity, promote a strong immune system and has excellent palatability,” the company stated.
