Provetica LLC has received U.S. regulatory approval for Modulis for Cats, the first generic cyclosporine oral solution for the management of feline allergic dermatitis. The prescription drug is bioequivalent to Elanco Animal Health’s Atopica for Cats, which was approved in 2011.
Feline allergic dermatitis is considered the second most common hypersensitivity disorder in cats after flea-bite dermatitis.
Oral cyclosporine benefits about 70% of cats when used to manage feline allergic dermatitis, according to veterinary researcher Dr. Rod A.W. Rosychuk.
Modulis for Cats, an immunosuppressive agent, is especially helpful for diabetic cats and those that don’t tolerate glucocorticoids.
The generic is intended for cats at least 6 months old and weighing 3 pounds or more, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. It may be administered on a small amount of food or orally after feeding.
Daily dosing is recommended for four to six weeks or until clinical signs resolve. The dose can then be tapered to every other day or twice weekly.
Modulis for Cats is not recommended for outdoor cats or raw meat eaters.
Provetica is based in Lenexa, Kansas.
