Health insurance for companion horses is now available in 12 states through ASPCA Pet Health Insurance, a brand of Crum & Forster Pet Insurance Group.
The company reported that California, Colorado, Connecticut, Kentucky, Oklahoma and Texas are the newest insurance territories, joining New York, New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Wisconsin.
The ASPCA plans cover either colic and accidents or colic, accidents and illnesses. Pre-existing conditions and cosmetic procedures are excluded. Preventive care may be selected at an additional cost.
Crum & Forster began offering health insurance for companion horses in June 2017.
“Previously, veterinary care insurance was available as an add-on to a mortality insurance policy reserved for race or performance horses,” the company stated.
