The Problem
Feline hypertension is a common yet frequently underdiagnosed condition that can have devastating consequences if left untreated. Up to 40% of senior cats and approximately 65% of cats with chronic kidney disease (CKD) are affected, but many exhibit few or no clinical signs until significant target organ damage has occurred.
Hypertension typically develops secondary to diseases such as CKD and hyperthyroidism. Without routine screening and early intervention, affected cats are at risk for irreversible complications involving the eyes, kidneys, heart, and central nervous system. These sequelae may include retinal detachment and blindness, progression of kidney disease, cardiovascular remodeling, seizures, and other neurologic abnormalities. Because these changes may not become apparent until disease is advanced, routine blood pressure monitoring in at-risk cats is essential for early detection and intervention.
Amlodipine has long been considered the first-line antihypertensive therapy in cats, but veterinarians have historically relied on off-label, generic human formulations not developed specifically for feline patients. This approach presents challenges related to tablet size, dosing accuracy, administration, and long-term treatment adherence.
Because hypertension requires lifelong management, consistent administration is critical to achieving sustained blood pressure control and reducing the risk of progressive target organ damage, underscoring the need for treatment options designed specifically for cats.
The Solution
The most effective strategy for managing feline hypertension begins with early detection through routine blood pressure monitoring, particularly in senior cats and those with CKD, hyperthyroidism, or other conditions associated with systemic hypertension.
Current consensus guidelines recommend regular blood pressure assessment in at-risk cats since timely diagnosis and intervention are critical to reducing the risk of irreversible target organ damage. Once hypertension is identified, management should focus on treating underlying disease when present while achieving consistent, long-term blood pressure control through regular monitoring and therapeutic adjustments. Follow-up blood pressure evaluations are essential to assess treatment response, guide dose adjustments, monitor for changes in concurrent disease, and help ensure therapeutic goals are maintained while minimizing the risk of progressive target organ damage.
However, successful long-term management extends beyond selecting an effective antihypertensive medication. Because feline hypertension is a chronic condition, treatment compliance plays a central role in maintaining blood pressure control and protecting target organs. If medication administration is too difficult or stressful for the cat or caregiver, the therapy’s effectiveness is irrelevant.
Selecting a treatment that is clinically effective and readily accepted by feline patients can improve the consistency of administration, support sustained blood pressure control, and strengthen the partnership between veterinarians and cat owners. Ultimately, successful hypertension management depends on combining early diagnosis, evidence-based treatment, ongoing monitoring, and practical solutions that make long-term therapy achievable.
The Innovation
While off-label use of generic human amlodipine products has been the standard antihypertensive therapy for cats for many years, these medications were not developed with feline patients in mind. Ceva’s veterinary experts recognized that the profession needed not only an effective active ingredient but also a treatment designed specifically for the unique challenges of feline medicine. The goal was to develop a product that combined proven blood pressure control with a formulation that supports the consistent, long-term administration required to manage a chronic disease.
Amodip® (amlodipine besylate tablets) is the first and only FDA-approved treatment specifically indicated for the control of systemic hypertension in cats. Rather than adapting human medication for veterinary use, the product was developed exclusively for feline patients, with formulation research focused on therapeutic efficacy and ease of administration. The resulting chicken-flavored chewable tablet demonstrated approximately 80% patient acceptance, helping address one of the most common barriers to successful long-term therapy: consistent medication administration.
FDA approval was supported by laboratory studies, target-animal safety evaluations, published clinical literature, and a multicenter, randomized, double-masked, vehicle-controlled field effectiveness study involving client-owned cats with systemic hypertension. In the clinical trial, 64.1% of cats treated with Amodip achieved the predefined treatment success criteria after 28 days, compared with 17.6% of control cats.
Treated cats also experienced a mean reduction in systolic blood pressure of more than 28 mm Hg, demonstrating the product’s effectiveness in controlling feline hypertension. The approved dosing regimen allows clinicians to initiate therapy at 0.125–0.25 mg/kg once daily and, after 14 days, adjust the dose based on follow-up blood pressure measurements.
FDA approval reflects a rigorous review of the product’s safety, effectiveness, manufacturing quality, and labeling. For veterinarians, this provides confidence that the product has been specifically evaluated for feline patients rather than adapted from human medicine. That confidence is further strengthened by Amodip’s established clinical history outside the U.S. The product has been available in Europe for more than a decade and is also approved for use in Canada, providing veterinarians with years of real-world experience across a broad range of clinical settings.
This combination of regulatory review, published clinical evidence, and extensive international use offers an added level of confidence in species-specific treatment designed to support consistent, long-term blood pressure management in cats.
